Low Thyroid Symptoms
These are caused by hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland produces an insufficient amount of hormones. And since the thyroid is responsible for the functionality of most organs, the metabolic rate and cellular exchanges, any dysfunction affects the overall system.
The most common symptoms
Weight gain appears because with a reduced amount of hormones in the blood stream, the metabolic rate drops. The thyroid tells the body to slow down in the energy burning process. Hence, you start to put on weight.
Skin and hair dryness represent a direct consequence of hypothyroidism. The problem does not become apparent right away, as it settles in gradually over a longer period of time. Moreover, this symptom may be confused for an indicator of some nutritional deficiency such as vitamin E or A deficiency.
Depression is one of the nervous low thyroid symptoms. Unless the condition is correctly diagnosed, the patient might receive an incorrect treatment. Yet, without eliminating the cause, depression won’t subside, and it will be back once medication is discontinued. Nervous system problems have also been reported for other malfunctions of the thyroid such as hyperthyroidism or thyroid nodules.
Cold hands and feet could be caused by circulatory problems, but also due to hypothyroidism. The incomplete secretion of hormones makes it difficult for the body to regulate temperature correctly. Hence, the problem appears. This symptom alone is not enough to indicate hypothyroidism; it needs to be evaluated in the bigger picture, with the other discomforts you may be experiencing.
The list could also include:
- decreased libido;
- irritability and memory problems;
- muscle cramps;
- fatigue;
- abnormal menstrual cycles;
- constipation etc.
Symptoms could vary greatly from one person to another. Make sure you leave no symptom out when having a medical examination.
Treatments
1. The administration of supplementary thyroid hormones (thyroxine) to eliminate the imbalance in the body. The dosage necessary needs to adjusted depending on the patient’s needs. Only the doctor can tell how the treatment ought to be adjusted for maximum of efficiency. When symptoms go away, the optimal dosage has been reached.
2. Some herbal supplements stimulate the thyroid’s function naturally. They do not contain hormones, but active ingredients that can make the thyroid gland produce the biochemicals necessary for optimal system functions.
Regular checkups
- The administration of hormone replacements is usually temporary, but the doctor will recommend periodical blood tests to monitor the patient’s condition.
- The dosage of thyroxine may thus be lowered or increased depending on what the blood tests tell and the evolution of the patient’s condition. If the symptoms decrease but don’t go away, a higher dose of hormone may be required.
The symptoms are easy to alleviate but good health depends on treatment continuity.
